About Dr. Raphael

Dr. Raphael worked as an internist at Kaiser for 3 years before completing her "mini-residency" in Occupational Medicine with Joseph La Dou, M.D. At UCSF. She then worked as a primary treating physician in the workers compensation system at Kaiser for 18 years until her retirement in 2013. Since that time she has worked as an Internal Medicine Qualified Medical 

Evaluator in the California Workers Compensation system in Northern California. The scope of her practice encompasses all of internal medicine with a focus on derivative internal medicine injuries to orthopedic, stress, and treatment related injuries (such as medication side effects, weight gain and infections/injuries resulting from surgical/medical treatment). Her particular interests include hypertension/heart disease, gastrointestinal disorders, hernias, sleep disorders, diabetes and infectious diseases.

 

She was chosen as an SME (subject matter expert) by CPS HR Consulting who administer the QME examinations in California and participates in the QME examination process evaluating questions and answers for QME applicants in the state of California. Involvement in this process requires keeping up to date with legal changes in the California labor code and 

knowledge of the four corners of the AMA Guides 5th edition.

 

Additionally, while employed at Kaiser she was a mentor in the PHP program (physicians helping physicians), assisting other physicians in their communication skills with patients, in time management, and the efficient use of the electronic medical record (EMR). 

 

Lastly, Dr. Raphael has also had experience managing a medical office in the East Bay, served as a lead physician at Kaiser Martinez Occupational Health, and as a medical director for the Westside Community Health Center in Santa Cruz, CA.

 

Her avocational interests include tutoring adults in the Berkeley Public Library literacy program "Berkeley Reads", gardening, and coordinating neighborhood emergency preparedness.
